Objective:

This course is a basic propulsion course for students who has not followed any other prior course on this topic. The course objective is to provide to student fundamental information about propulsion systems and to teach how to preliminary size a chemical propulsion unit.

 

 

General introduction about rockets, rocket performance parameters, TSIOLKOVSKY’s equation and its implications, general equation of a vehicle propelled by a rocket system, generalized  one-dimensional gasdynamics, one-dimensional isoentropic flow through a convergent-divergent nozzle, Fanno’s flow, Rayleight’s flow, introduction to gas behavior in high temperature conditions, equilibrium and non-equilibrium conditions, fundamentals of thermochemistry, real nozzle behavior. Solid Rockets: general overview of solid rockets, general equations, regression rate low and parameters of influence, propellants, ignition. Liquid Rockets: general overview of liquid rockets, general equations, injection, pressurization systems.

This section is available for students in order to exchange information and request help. 

The exam is divided into two parts, a written section and an oral section.

The written section is composed of three tests. The first test will be on one-dimensional isoentropic gas-dynamics and it is only for admission.  The second test is on generalized gasdynamics. The third part is on rocket design. The oral section is divided into two parts. The first part is focused on the review of the written section. The second part concerns the remaining of the program which has not been previously discussed.
